210. London Construction Academy, 10th Anniversary Celebration, Charterhouse Old Library, 12 June 2024
Livery Masters with a connection to construction were invited by the Master of the Worshipful Company of Paviors to join in the celebrations.
The London Construction Academy (registered charity number 1205290) was created to help people in the community not in education, employment or training (NEETS) to develop the knowledge and skill they need to enter the construction sector. The training course delivers a comprehensive range of skills and procedures for the exacting demands of working in the construction sector including technical delivery, health and safety and customer service. On graduation the students are introduced to a variety of construction sector companies with suitable opportunities to help give them that first start in the industry.
The London Construction Academy provides fully funded courses to enable people not in employment, education or training to receive transferable skills for employment. Travel expenses up to a maximum of £90 during the ten day course are met by the Worshipful Company of Paviors.
They run four courses per year and in ten days students learn:
- Health and Safety
- CSCS Revision and Test
- Fire Marshal
- First Aid
- Environmental Awareness
- Customer Service
- Preparing for Interviews
- London Bronze Pass Certificate for attending and passing all modules
Whilst they are not a job agency, several employers in the highways, civil engineering, construction and manufacturing industries advertise their apprenticeship and job opportunities with the academy so their graduating students can apply.
2.5 million are employed in the UK construction industry.
The paving sector is working hard to reduce costs and environmental impact. This includes the reuse of materials. I heard details from Conway of a road material made from 95% recycled road planings.
This
was a very encouraging initiative supported by a Livery Company meeting an
immediate business need in the industrial sector. It was also providing opportunities to young
people who might otherwise struggle to find employment. The individual case studies we heard were
very encouraging.
Congratulations to the Master and the Company of Paviors.
