201. The Worshipful Company of Engineers and the Engineers’ Trust Annual Awards, Carpenters’ Hall, 4 June 2024

Several Livery Masters are invited to join the Engineers Company for their annual Awards Dinner.  This year it was an extra special occasion as it was also celebrating 40 years of the Company.

Before the formalities started there was a celebration and signing of the agreement between the Company and the various sections of the armed services that they support.

The evening was funded by the Engineers’ Trust and the Company.

The Services Engineering Awards were for officers and NCOs from each of the services and presented by Air Vice Marshal Shaun Harris CBE, Chief Engineer RAF.

The first tranche of Civilian Awards was presented by Mark Wild OBE FREng to four sixth formers and £1500 per year each to six university students. There were then awards to mechanical and water engineering students. The water engineering award was made jointly with the International Water Association and the winner from Arup had developed a bespoke solution to flooding, drought and water pollution.  I invited her to join the Water Conservators.

There were then medals and £1,000 prizes for two postgraduates, and medals, a £5,000 prize for an academic developing carbon capture, and £5,000 for “Just a Drop” delivering clean water in Zambia.  Finally, there was a £1,200 award for defence engineering and a £20,000 grant towards preventing diabetic amputations by early internal soft tissue injury detection.  These prizes were given by Dr Paul Golby, former CEO of PowerGen and RWE with an extensive career in the power generation sector, who then gave the toast to the Company.

It was an impressive evening with mainly non cash prizes but with the prestige of attending a City black tie dinner with one’s peers.

Congratulations to the Master Engineer and the Company of Engineers in the organisation of such a successful event.
