101. Lord Mayor's Coffee Colloquy, UN Sustainable Development Goal 6: Clean Water and Sanitation, Mansion House, 11 January 2024

Within the 2023-24 Mayoral Theme “Connect to Prosper”, the Lord Mayor's Coffee Colloquies bring together experts from around the world to talk about how their work supports the achievement of one of the UN Sustainable Development Goals or another pressing global issue.  In April 2023 the Water Conservators offered the then incoming Lord Mayor to organise a colloquy on Goal 6 ‘Availability and sustainable management of water and sanitation for all’.

Colloquy 3 was organised by the Worshipful Company of Water Conservators and the Worshipful Company of Plumbers.  It reflected on how to achieve:

  • Universal access to adequate and equitable sanitation for all
  • Improving water quality by reducing pollution, eliminating dumping, and minimising release of hazardous chemicals and materials
  • Supporting the participation of local communities in developing countries, helping them improve water quality and sanitation.

Around 80 representatives of the City and the Livery attended including the Lady Mayoress.  As the Mayor was attending the World Economic Forum in Davos, the opening remarks were provided by Alderman Alastair King, DL.  He highlighted the role of the Livery in the life of the City.

Ten speakers then gave presentations lasting four minute (or thereabouts).

  • Professor Martin Bigg, Master, Worshipful Company of Water Conservators
  • Dinah Nichols CB, Court Assistant, Worshipful Company of Water Conservators
  • Alex Money, Founder and CEO Watermarq; Court Assistant, Worshipful Company of Water Conservators
  • Sarah Mukherjee, CEO Institute of Environment Management and Assessment (IEMA)
  • Paul Horton, CEO Future Water Association
  • Gemma Harvey, Professor Physical Geography, Queen Mary University of London; Bailiff, Worshipful Company of Water Conservators
  • Steve Kaye, CEO UKWIR - Collaborative Research in Water
  • Jeremy Galpin, Social value consultancy lead, COSTAIN
  • Dr Susanne Surman-Lee, Worshipful Company of Plumbers
  • Martin Shouler, ARUP, Worshipful Company of Plumbers

Hans Jensen, Director, UK Water Partnership, Liveryman Water Conservators, then led the Q&A.

It was a very successful event with many issues raised. We agreed to share the key points and the themes that emerged.

The Company is very grateful to Walbrook Warden, Tom Flood, who undertook the organisation with the Lord Mayor’s Office in the Mansion House and Martin Shouler from the Plumbers’ Company.  It was a good example of cross-Livery co-operation.
