84. The Lord Mayor’s Big Curry Lunch 2024 Launch, City of London Club, 29 November 2023

Livery Company Masters were invited to the launch of the promotion of the Lord Mayor’s Big Curry Lunch on Thursday 18th April 2024, in the Guildhall.  We heard the Co-Chairmen, the Right Hon the Lord Mayor Alderman and Professor Michael Mainelli and Mr Michael Hockney give a strong pitch to encourage individuals and companies to attend and raise more than £449,000 (this year’s total).

The lunch is in support of the Armed Forces charities (ABF The Soldiers’ Charity, the Royal Navy and Royal Marines Charity and the Royal Air Force Benevolent Fund), raising funds to meet the current urgent need to support veterans of the Armed Forces into employment. Created in 2007 and first taking place in 2008, the Lord Mayor's Big Curry Lunch is the City of London's hottest annual event.

There are three sittings for lunch and free bars in the Livery Hall and Old Library serving wine and Cobra beer. In addition to an amazing set of offers in the silent auction, there is a chance to win a pair of diamond earrings or a British handmade bespoke watch.  Tickets start at £100 each with plenty of packages and promotional opportunities.  Food for thought?

229. Sunset Cruise and Dinner, River Thames, 2 July 2024

My thank you event for the Court and Company had to involve water, so what better way than a sunset cruise on the Thames!   I wanted a memorable expression of thanks to members of the Court, Past Masters, Fellow Masters, Consorts and friends. I took the advice of the Master Waterman and approached several companies to hire a boat for the evening. The first we declined when we found that the catering was not of the required standard. Everything was going well for the second boat until I advertised it to the Court and had more responses than could fit on the boat. So we got a bigger boat and filled it. The caterer was concerned how they could feed us all but I was confident it would work. On Monday morning I took a call from the boat company to say that the refuelling on Saturday night had resulted in contaminated oil getting to the engine and they offered a fourth boat …. the Wellington ! There was a great turnout from the Company and sector for the third in our prestigious series of City Water Debates.   Organised around World Water Day it was close to 1st April, the 50 year anniversary of the formation of the regional water authorities, based on river basins and catchments.   They are still the fundamental building blocks of the organisation of the water companies and the Environment Agency.
