3. Brigantes Breakfast, The Royal Hall, Harrogate, 7 July 2023

Eileen and I were pleased to be invited to the Brigantes Breakfast, which was a perfect opportunity for Liverymen from all City of London Companies to meet together in the North.

We arrived early in the Royal Hall’s Kings Suite for the 2023 Brigantes Lecture, given by author, TV presenter and ‘Antiques Road Trip’ expert Philip Serrell.   He described his early career as a teacher then auctioneer.  His immaculate pin-striped suit lasted seconds in the ring with pigs and sheep.  His interest in antiques was infectious; he became particularly interested in Worcester porcelain.  He also described the occasions when he was presented with family treasures and prized possessions which he had to advise were almost worthless.  His message to young people starting their careers was to do what interests you and enjoy.

After a ceremonial procession and welcome by Simon Theakston DL Past Master Brewer, we were treated to a full meal and lunchtime musical entertainment - the West End comes to Harrogate.

It was a great opportunity to meet and talk to many Masters and Liverymen and their consorts from different companies and backgrounds.  We had fascinating conversations on artificial joints, radioactive waste, socks and many others.  I will leave you to identify the livery company!  Alderman Vincent Keaveny, late Lord Mayor, gave the response on behalf of the guests and described the role and value of the Livery movement, particularly its charity work.  We eventually left breakfast at 5pm!
